A Titus 2 Journey ~ Week 6 ~ Aged Women

Titus 2.3-5 ~ aged women

The aged women likewise, that they be in behaviour as becometh holiness, not false accusers,  not given to much wine, teachers of good things;  That they may teach the young women to be sober, to love their husbands,  to love their children,  To be discreet, chaste, keepers at home, good, obedient to their own husbands,  that the word of God be not blasphemed.   Titus 2. 3-5

Titus 2 ~ Week  Six

Action:  Read the passage again… paying close attention to verse 3: The aged women likewise, that they be in behaviour as becometh holiness, not false accusers,  not given to much wine, teachers of good things;

♥ This Week’s Verses:  Read Titus 2.1-3:  1.”But speak thou the things which become sound doctrine: 2. That the aged men be sober, grave, temperate, sound in faith, in charity, in patience.  3. The aged women likewise, that they be in behaviour as becometh holiness, not false accusers,  not given to much wine, teachers of good things;” (emphasis, mine)

So let us understand two main points that launch this whole study of three little, power-packed, verses:  “aged women” and “likewise

“The aged women likewise…”

Many years ago, I had a couple of aged-women in my life who taught me to love the Word, they taught me to search it out, to memorize it, to pray, to wait on the Lord, and… to be prepared to teach other women. They were aged-Christian-women, teachers of good things.  They had both lived faithful, growing, maturing, lives.  They had lived on the Word, they were as Samuel, growing in age and in the Lord, “And Samuel grew, and the LORD was with him, and did let none of His words fall to the ground.”–1 Samuel 3.19

As an aside, remember whenever you see a wherefore or a therefore, in scripture,  stop and ask yourself: what is that? what is that therefore there for? where is the previous information?  Train yourself to ask questions, find answers, gain deeper understanding of the Scriptures.  The Lord has tucked in, as it were, nuggets of gold and silver all through the Word.  Find those nuggets, tuck them in your pocket! Ask questions!  Connect the dots… they run through the Scriptures!

Thoughts for discussion:

  • When is a woman considered to be an aged woman?
    (answers will vary widely)
  • Consider what’s happening in a woman’s life as she is aging.
  • The likewise qualities that are necessary qualities which become sound doctrine, characteristics, disciplines, attributes of elders, bishops, deacons, teachers — and— aged Christian women (who teach)!  Do you see this?  This is the high standard — the high calling — of aged Christian women.  Aged Christian women are to be in behaviour as becomes holiness — and then in 3.3, we see the brief list of some of the attributes of this holiness — a couple of behaviours and an active ministry: teaching!  The next couple of verses, which we’ll be studying in the weeks to come, contain the content of their teaching – the good things they are to teach.  Inherent in this is understood that the aged women have lived out these things: they know these things by faith in the Lord Jesus Christ andexperientially

  • As aged women — as teachers of good things, they are to be holy in behavior, [the likewise: sober, grave, temperate, sound in faith, in charity, in patience from verses 1&2] they are to not be slanderers or false accusers,  in bondage to or enslaved to much wine, etc.
  • Are these qualities or guidelines just for aged women?
  • When do you begin the journey of the aged woman?
(Nearing my fortieth birthday, my precious friend, Florence, told me that whatever I was doing at forty, I’d be doing at eighty—unless I made changes.  That was a “turning point” for me.  Those changes she was talking about were changes in habits, in disciplines, obedience, etc., before the Lord.   Probably one of the most life impacting pieces of advice — she was, after all, eighty at the time. ♥)

A little deeper:

  • Search the Scriptures: can you find women of the Bible or verses regarding these virtuous qualities?
  • Can you find verses to help you as you strive to develop these virtues?
  • What are you doing to develop these qualities in your life (regardless your age)?
  • Do you know women who possesses these qualities (in your life or in print)?

What do you most notice or find most interesting about her/them?

    What is her/their approximate age?

Do you strive to emulate her or the qualities?  Careful here – very careful.  Search out the qualities, learn what they are, pray for wisdom regarding the attributes that interest you, inspire you.  Pray about these things; pray with your husband about these things.  Yielding your life, desire, design, etc.,  to the Lord: apply the things the Lord gives you to do/understand/obey.

Affirmations/Decisions for the week ahead:

  • Suggestion:  write out a few verses pertaining to the qualities you’re seeking to develop… place them in a prominent place.
  • In the coming week I purpose to:____________________________________
